Regardless it was bad behavior, but I do feel like this was highly sensationalized by the media. When I think of eye gouging I think of an eye being ripped from its socked, or Oedipus using clothes pins to effectively blind hisself. The Georgia player suffered no injuries, making me think this was more of an eye poking.
Is this a moot point? No. I was poked in the eyes. My eyes were gouged out! Which one do you think was cause injury? Gouging should, but there was no medical attention seeked by the Georgia victim. This makes me define it as a an eye-poking. Unfortunately this false, sensationalized label could very likely prevent Spikes from getting some awards.
I can not imagine Spikes actually trying to rip someones eyes out of their socket. That is totally unreasonable. To me it appeared the combination of the face mask and Spike's gloves interferred, making him move around trying to get to the eyes.
It was definitely deliberate, but people should not get to carried away. Dirty things happen all the time (in fact Spikes was victim earlier in that game) but they are not usually seen. For example, the OSU Tebow stomp at the end of their 41-14 loss. No one remembers because they already had a story (can be found on youtube.)
The point I am getting at is this. The difference between punching someones teeth out and slapping someone is the same as gouging and eye out, and poking an eye.
